What Is an IPO?
An Initial Public Offering (IPO) is when a company offers its shares to the public for the first time and then lists them on a stock exchange such as NSE or BSE. The company may be raising fresh capital (a fresh issue), existing shareholders may be selling (an offer for sale), or both.
Before the issue opens, the company files a Red Herring Prospectus (RHP). It covers the business, financials, objects of the issue, promoters and, most importantly, the risk factors. Every decision should start with this document. WealthBay is not a stock broker; you apply through your own bank or broker platform, and we help you understand the issue and the steps.
Applying Through UPI or ASBA
UPI Mandate
Place your bid on a broker app or exchange platform and approve the UPI mandate in your UPI app. The amount is blocked in your bank account until allotment.
- Bid via broker app with your UPI ID
- Approve the mandate before the cut-off time
- Available for applications within the UPI limit
- Funds blocked, not debited
ASBA (Net Banking)
Apply through your bank's net banking under ASBA (Application Supported by Blocked Amount). The bank blocks the bid amount and forwards the application.
- Apply from your bank's IPO / ASBA section
- Enter demat details and bid
- Funds blocked, not debited
- Works for all application sizes your bank allows
From Bid to Listing
Bid
Bid in multiples of the lot within the price band, or at the cut-off price, during the issue period.
Basis of Allotment
If oversubscribed, retail allotment is generally by lottery, with a minimum of one lot per successful applicant as per SEBI rules. Allotment is not guaranteed.
Debit or Unblock
The amount for allotted shares is debited; the rest is unblocked. If you get no allotment, the full amount is unblocked.
Credit & Listing
Allotted shares are credited to your demat and start trading on the listing day.
What to Expect on Listing Day
Listing gains are not guaranteed. Shares can list at a premium, at the issue price or below it, and prices can move sharply in the first days of trading.
Grey-market premium (GMP) figures circulated online are unofficial and unregulated, and we do not use them. Base your decision on the RHP, the valuation and your own holding horizon.
Mainboard vs SME IPOs
Our focus is mainboard issues. SME issues carry additional risks.
| Aspect | Mainboard IPO | SME IPO |
|---|---|---|
| Exchange platform | Main segment of NSE / BSE | NSE Emerge / BSE SME platform |
| Typical company size | Larger, more established businesses | Smaller, often early-stage businesses |
| Minimum application | Usually lower; one lot | Usually much higher, as SME lot sizes are large |
| Liquidity after listing | Generally higher | Often thin; buying or selling can be harder |
| Risk | Market and business risk | Higher business, liquidity and information risk |
