Tax Planning

Invest Smarter With Tax in Mind

Good tax planning is not a last-minute rush in March. It is about choosing investments and insurance that fit your goals and use the tax rules sensibly, all year round.

Overview

What Is Tax Planning?

Tax planning means arranging your investments and insurance so that you pay tax efficiently within the law, while still serving your actual financial goals. The aim is not to buy a product just to save tax, but to make sure the products you need are chosen and timed in a tax-aware way.

In India, your choice of tax regime, the deductions you claim and how your investments are taxed when you sell them all affect how much you keep. We help you understand these in general terms so you can make informed choices with your tax professional.

Regime Choice

Old vs New Tax Regime: The Key Trade-off

Salaried individuals and others can generally choose between the two regimes, subject to rules for each assessment year. Slabs, rates and limits change with each Budget, so always check current limits under the Income-tax Act.

AspectOld RegimeNew Regime
Tax slabsHigher rates on the same incomeLower rates; the default regime under current law
DeductionsMost deductions available, such as 80C and 80DMost deductions not available; a few remain
May suitThose who claim large deductions, such as home loan interest, 80C and 80DThose with fewer deductions who prefer simplicity

Common Options

Tax-Aware Investment and Insurance Options

Deductions are available only under the old regime unless stated otherwise, and limits are as per current provisions of the Income-tax Act.

ELSS Mutual Funds (80C)

Equity-linked savings schemes qualify under Section 80C and have the shortest lock-in among 80C options. Returns are market-linked. Mutual fund investments are subject to market risks, read all scheme related documents carefully.

PPF (80C)

The Public Provident Fund is a long-term government-backed savings scheme with a long lock-in. Its interest rate is set by the government and reviewed periodically.

Life Insurance Premium (80C)

Premiums for life insurance on yourself, your spouse or children can qualify under Section 80C, subject to conditions. Buy insurance for protection first, not only for the deduction.

Health Insurance Premium (80D)

Health insurance premiums for yourself, your family and your parents can qualify under Section 80D, with separate limits for senior citizens as per current law.

NPS

Contributions to the National Pension System can qualify for deductions, including an additional deduction under Section 80CCD(1B) and employer contributions, subject to current rules.

Capital Gains Awareness

Equity, debt, gold and property are each taxed differently on sale, depending on the holding period. Knowing the rules before you redeem can help you time withdrawals sensibly.

Year-Round Habits

Practical Tax-Aware Habits

Small, consistent habits matter more than last-minute product purchases. These are general practices; whether each applies to you depends on your income, regime and goals.

Choose your regime each year after comparing your tax under both
Start 80C investments early in the year, for example through an ELSS SIP
Buy adequate health cover for your family and parents first, then consider the deduction
Use tax harvesting to book long-term equity gains within the annual exemption, where relevant
Track holding periods before redeeming to understand the tax impact
Keep proofs and statements organised for filing

We Are Not Tax Advisors

FAQs

Common Questions About Tax Planning

Which tax regime should I choose?
It depends on your income and the deductions you can claim. Compare the tax payable under both regimes each year. A qualified tax professional can help you with the exact calculation.
Is ELSS better than PPF for saving tax?
They serve different needs. ELSS is market-linked with a shorter lock-in and the potential for higher long-term growth along with higher volatility. PPF has a government-set interest rate and a much longer lock-in. Many people use both. Mutual fund investments are subject to market risks, read all scheme related documents carefully.
Can I claim 80D for my parents' health insurance?
Yes, under the old regime you can generally claim a deduction for health insurance premiums paid for your parents, with a higher limit if they are senior citizens, as per current limits under the Income-tax Act.
What is tax harvesting?
Tax harvesting means selling and reinvesting investments to book gains within the annual exemption limit for long-term capital gains on equity, or booking losses to set off against gains, as permitted by current law. It needs careful attention to exit loads and holding periods.
Will you file my income tax return?
No. We are not a CA or tax advisor and do not file returns. We can share the investment statements and capital gains reports you need to give your tax professional.
